Traditional Meets Contemporary
This proposal for a new build 3,500 feet square house in the heart of Notting Hill would replace a small 1,100 feet square artist studio. Set in the wide sweeping roads of W11 amongst the grand houses this 1950's infill had been lost to time. The brief was to replace the existing building with a family house that made the most of the site location and wonderful 75 feet rear garden.
 
The sensitivity of the site meant that careful consideration needed to be paid to its: scale, mass and style. The resultant design proposal was a carefully laid out building over four floors utilizing the natural difference in levels to produce a new property that blended the old with the new. 
 
The brief of the project was to maximise the floor space and combine period exterior features that would fit within the beautiful surroundings of one of Notting Hill's premier roads. Its placement within an area containing many listed and buildings of historical importance added to the challenge.
 
The final design externally took the form of a traditional style period property with selective contemporary detailing to set the property apart. Internally, the property boasts crisp, clean modern lines with an abundance of space. In this design to maximise the floor area and take advantage of the beautiful south facing rear garden, the floor plate was split in a 'scissor' design allowing for increased views over the south facing garden.
 
From the entrance hall, one can see past the lounge set at rear ground floor level into the garden, whilst the stairs flow downwards to the large kitchen and dining room. Additional accommodation in the form of a guest suite was placed at this level under the existing garden to section it off from the main house area for privacy. 
 
Moving up through the property further generous sized bedroom with ensuites can be found, with the master suite to the rear of the building looking out across the landscaped south facing garden.
 
Reclaimed London brick, lead, glass and stone detailing of the exterior ensure the building sits comfortably within its surrounding whilst maintaining its own identity. Internally, there is everything one would need for modern family living and entertaining.
